EXCERPTS FROM GARRY KASPAROV 'S SPEECH : : Kens (NYC Sports Commissioner) last words …. Were not very optimistic …. I will probably be more optimistic … I played many matches with computers and software.. Now my mind is sort of struggling I have to prepare for a very powerful computer, one of the most dominate chess software. I have to remind you a year ago fritz 7. Drew a normal classical match with Vladimir Kramnik. in an 8 game match. Now I am facing a stronger program, its chess is upgraded, its one-year-older and one year of computer technology in the 21st century, is an eternity. At the same time I have to get my mind adjusted to virtual reality , so I am now rushing from normal computer preparation …. With these devices set up in my room at the hotel I have to practice, find the best angle, how to move the pieces and to make sure that the … one reality as the game progresses .. my mind is still functioning and I will not be losing pieces. I am quite happy with my opponent … I am now in a position to learn from this experience .. I am not sharing this pessimistic prognostication of new York sports commissioner but I have to agree with him on some ground . in a few years time it will be virtually impossible for a human player to beat the machine in a long match .. long match 4 –6 games because we all suffer from outside interferences .. it could be a headache , bad weather , family problems, stock market crash, and your performance will be affected. While the machine will not know if its winning or losing, how many games where played …and its play is quite persistent. So I envision in the near future , maybe not in the nearest future lets say 5 years from now that the entire concept of the match will be reduced to the very simple form .. the best human player beats the best machine on his\her best day. That’s enough. So that’s what we have to find out on the best day with the machines I am always finding enough material to work with .. sort of weaknesses and soft spots in the machines preparation but it is getting more and more difficult for a human player to exploit it .. because even if you get an excellent position ... even if you drive the machine into territory it does not feel comfortable You still have to deliver and delivery is one of the major problems. .. in chess as in any sport its complicated.. human nature So analyzing human games even the greatest games master pieces you always find inaccuracies.. because as the player on the winning side will lose a little bit of concentration ,, the player on the losing side .. is inevitably losing confidence . but a machine on the winning side or losing side does not care and it plays consistently . so the consistency, delivery , some loss of concentration those are the biggest enemies of human player in this challenge . It makes it more exciting . every time we must be more creative , every time we have to spend more time analyzing the machines performance the software changes that are delivered to us . obviously my preparation at beating computers is to try to predict what is the immediate reaction .. the machine reaction to certain situations . at one point , I would like to use the star war analogy ….. in star wars the only way to beat the imperial ship .. was to find this one little spot on the star ship and blow it up .. With the computer now, we are also heading for the same type of exercise ..You have to find this very little soft spot … it’s a lot of pressure on my shoulders .. but at the same time it creates more excitement … so again with this experiment we are entering a new world of virtual reality .. which will be our real life pretty soon …and I am very proud to be a part of this experiment …very happy to work with x3d …and I am very happy that chess is staring again as a very important tool to improve our vision of the future.
