Game 4 - Post game comments

With us now is world number one player Garry Kasparov , Garry congratulations on a good finish in this event. You were under tremendous pressure to come back in game 3. 11 games you have not won with the black pieces.  So you must have felt more pressure in this game coming in.

Kasparov :   I spent a lot of time yesterday..  I had to try to figure out what I wanted to do …  I won game 3 …it was not very easy ….a lot of preparation … I played a very long game preparing for this game..  many hours trying to figure out what I should .play . ….  And I spoke to my son … he said “daddy you better win today.. but you must not lose “ ..

Announcer : was psychological warfare part of today's game..

Kasparov::   it's not about the machine, it's about the humans behind the machine.. so, but I don’t know when or how they ended the preparations for the machine..  . …  we analyzed this position a few years ago .. and  … I saw that black cannot defend..  …cause him more problems ..  the big question is where does the book end….

Ashley : now that you tied the match   how do you feel about .. man vs. machine

Kasparov; I think this match is somewhat similar to the one I played last January against Deep Junior. I think for the human player.. I had many opportunities.  Both losses resulted from terrible terrible blunders. …  So Deep Junior did not out play me …and I had a steady game through out  the match. . So it is two wins for me and two for both computers. I was quite happy with the general development, of these matches. So it is still up to me.. if I don’t make a terrible blunder .. I should win or not lose ..

Yassar : does it concern you Garry that.. the computer is getting better and better faster and faster ..with hardware .. and software  is superlative.. all these variables ..

Kasparov : absolutely.. its quite amazing … that the machine I lost to (Deep Blue) ..is it's own computer ..

In the 2nd game where I resigned in a drawn position. I did not see how I could draw.. And fritz finds it in two minutes. (Garry is talking about 2nd game in 1997 Deep Blue match)  That is why this machine is very good. But we, humans are also learning. The machines are getting better. We are also learning, that is very important. Today I know more about computer's functions.

Announcer: we are indeed learning ...

Hangin: Garry is up against near perfection ,isn’t it time to modify the experiment  and give the human player more time.. and even the computer move time .. to solve the problems..

Kasparov the computer more time

Hangin: it doesn’t matter, (more time will generally not help the computer.. get to the next ply.. searches grow exponentially)  that was an issue (handicap match if human has more time. if they both have more time then no handicap) (Garry wanted more time.. but he said people would think it was a handicap match - my point was that if you give both man and machine more time .. it is not handicap)

Kasparov: the negotiation process will be working on the rules. For this competition.

The proper rules for a very unusual competition. with the  virtual reality.. It’s an edge for the machine. I think … human players … organizers to come up with the best rules for the event. To create a level playing field. for both sides ..       So there are a number of things that can be discussed.. you have to consider that if you  asked the machine to get weaker by not memorizing the lines…. Asking machines memory to be diminished.. so its important ..  .. I am sure now .. it comes down to this  very important on going negotiations.  … fair rules for  this competition..
