1/2006 - In 2004 at the US championship, Ben finished tied for 22nd
place.
Ben is a very busy tournament player, playing mostly in the north
Midwest.
He recently got this third GM norm at the Martinovsky Memorial tournament. It's been a long, tough grind for the 36
year old IM. It takes true grit to work your way up to the GM title. Despite
what Nigel Short says, I think it still very difficult to become a GM. It's
really difficult to do it by playing mostly in the US.
In April of 2005, Ben
tied for first with Varuzhan Akobian at the Chicago Spring
Invitational.
In June of 2005, Ben fought his way to a 4-way tie for first at
the National Chess Open in Las Vegas. The Blitz tie-breaker between Dmitry
Gurevich, Nick Defirmian, Ben Finegold , and Sharavdorj was decided in Dmitry
Gurevich favor.
Ben also had a number of first place finishes in Midwest
tournaments.
Ben's FIDE rating is 2563 and his USCF rating is a hefty 2656. Ben joined the ChessFM broadcast team and covered
the new US Chess League. You can contact Ben via his web page
https://www.geocities.com/gmfinegold/BPF.html.
FIDE has rejected Ben's third GM norm on a technicality. However, Ben
should get his third norm in the coming year.
